A clear and decisive plan could have avoided the current humanitarian crises in Afghanistan
Frank Herbert rightly said “that one moment of incompetence can be fatal.” The recent mayhem following the exit of the U.S troops from Afghanistan suggests that one incompetent moment by Joe Biden has created another Saigon moment. The conclusion of the long Afghan war is that security and humanitarian crises could have been avoided had there been a decisive plan. The fall of Kabul indicates the failure of the U.S intelligence. However, Mark Zeller, CIA analyst claims to have warned the Biden administration in February and April that evacuating people would require the largest air lift since 1948. Zeller further claimed that the Biden administration did not listen to the intelligence report creating trouble for the Afghans which seems beyond repair. Biden claimed on 8th July that there will be no parallels between the U.S withdrawal from Afghanistan and the Fall of Saigon. Biden had earlier asserted. “Because you — the Afghan troops have 300,000 well-equipped — as well-equipped as any army in the world — and an air force against something like 75,000 Taliban.” One view suggests that Biden was unaware of the actual number of the Afghan troops. There are many ghost soldiers reported to have on the rolls but they are not actually in the Afghan army. Therefore, Biden’s claim that 300,000 Afghan fighters would resist the Taliban was completely wrong. Biden also stated. “There’s going to be no circumstance where you see people being lifted off the roof of an embassy of the United States in Afghanistan.” However, the following two pictures clearly show the parallels between U.S withdrawal from Afghanistan and the fall of Saigon.
American evacuation from Afghanistan has created another Saigon moment. Officials at the U.S embassy burnt all the sensitive material to save it from falling in the hands of the Taliban. It is obviously true that these images would continue to haunt Biden as he claimed that there were no parallels between the Afghan exit and the fall of Saigon. Following the situation in Afghanistan an impending migration crisis in Europe haunts many EU politicians. Therefore, with elections looming in Germany and France European leaders are not willing to accommodate more Afghan refugees. Images showing desperate Afghans storming the Kabul airport in an effort to flee the country indicate the severity of the current humanitarian crises. Not only has the fall of Kabul created another Saigon moment for the United States but has also unleashed the risk of global terrorists’ activities. As five hundred hard core prisoners have been freed from the Afghan jails there is a greater probability of terrorist activities. The U.S military generals in June claimed that it would take at least two years for terror networks in Afghanistan to operate. However, the U.S generals have now come up with a new estimate suggesting that terror networks would become operational in less than two years’ time. The incompetency of the Biden administration has recreated the Saigon moment followed by a humanitarian crisis. One moment of incompetence by Biden has created humanitarian and migration crises coupled with greater risks of global terrorism. Therefore, it seems true in case of Joe Biden that a timid and incompetent leader is always dangerous.
